Principles of Wholistic Health

The concept of Wholistic health has its roots in ancient Chinese medicine yet is fast becoming the approach to health care for today and tomorrow.

Herbal Connections reflects the core principles of Wholistic health

  • Real health involves the whole person. Mind and body are integrated and inseparable.
  • The body is an energy system, controlling a physical system.
  • Wholistic health treats the whole person, not just symptoms and disease.
  • Real health is not just the absence of disease, but a positive state of being.
  • Real health is achieved with treatment of causes rather than symptoms, using natural and preventive approaches to health.
  • Each person has a responsibility for his/her own health & must be an active participant in his/her own healing.
  • In Wholism, all approaches to health are valued and integrated.

The Homeodynamic Model

A fundamental principle of Wholistic medicine is the knowledge that health is not just the absence of disease, but a dynamic state of balance in a living energy system. This core principle, that individuals are in a constant and dynamic relationship to health and to illness, while always striving for the balance that reflects good health, is known as the homeodynamic model.

The homeodynamic model emphasizes the interaction between an individual and his/her environment in ways that either promote or prevent health and well-being. Harmony in these interactions reflects a state of wellness; disharmony and imbalance results in disease.

According to the homeodynamic model, there are several major sources of imbalance. They may be:

  • Diet - poor nutrition or the ingestion of toxic substances
  • Environment - exposure to toxic substances, strain from noise or particular weather conditions
  • Disease - microorganisms that are not effectively controlled by normal bodily mechanisms
  • Stress - stressful living conditions, especially of a chronic nature
  • Exercise - insufficient quantity or poor quality of exercise
  • Emotions - excessive stress on the emotional nature severely affecting the balance of the mind/body.
  • Posture - spinal misalignment that causes stress and improper neural activity
  • Fatigue - insufficient rest or a lifestyle that drains the energy system

By understanding the causes of disharmony and making dynamic changes and adjustments in the energy system, harmony and balance - good health - can be restored. In this way, the homeodynamic model becomes a powerful source of true healing focusing not just on the treatment of symptoms but on underlying root causes of imbalance and disease.
